June 19-22, 2000
At the Westin Hotel in Long Beach, California

"Rocks In Your Head"
Earth Science Workshop & Field Trip
Continuing Education Opportunity For Teachers Grades 6-12

Presented and Sponsored by
American Association of Petroleum Geologists Foundation, Crail-Johnson Foundation, Chevron, THUMS Long Beach Company and the City of Long Beach

An Overview:
A related pair of earth science continuing education opportunities (one workshop and one field trip) for teachers in grades 6 -12 will be presented on Saturday, June 17 and Saturday, June 24.  These events will be headquartered at the Westin Hotel in downtown Long Beach.  A map to the hotel and room location information will be supplied to registrants.  Workshop fees to participants will be only $10 for each part.  Both workshop and field trip each consist of an ~8-hour group activity.
The "Rocks in your Head" workshop was prepared by the Education Office of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and has been presented to teachers ~15 times around the United States.  Its goals are to review key topics in Earth Science and then to demonstrate how these topics can be effectively presented in an active-learning, game-like mode to students of different knowledge levels and science backgrounds.  The course is presented by Patty Holyfield, a professional geologist and science educator headquartered in Texas who tours the country presenting this workshop under
contract to the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.  A 200+ page workbook, rock and mineral kits, and lunch are all included in the $10 fee.

The associated field trip was designed and will be lead by Don Clarke, Chief Geologist for the City of Long Beach.  This trip will begin and end at the Westin Hotel in Long Beach, and will visit several locations in coastal Orange and southern Los Angeles counties.  The trip will provide teachers with a complete overview of the nature of oil deposits, one of the most important economic resources in southern California.  All of the field trip stops can be revisited by teachers with their own students, and the
extensive fieldtrip guidebook supplied to all participants contains sufficient background materials for teachers to construct their own field trip concerning the geology and exploitation of oil deposits, as well as the environmental hazards related to exploitation.   Bus transportation, lunch, snacks, and a complete guidebook will be provided for the $10 fee.

"Rocks In Your Head"
Earth Science Workshop & Field Trip
Continuing Education Opportunity For Teachers Grades 6-12

Presented and Sponsored by
American Association of Petroleum Geologists Foundation, Crail-Johnson Foundation, Chevron, THUMS Long Beach Company and the City of Long Beach

Workshop:

Saturday June 17, 2000
9:00 AM to 4:30PM (check-in 8:30  9:00 AM)
Westin Hotel (Ocean Blvd and Long Beach Blvd.)
Long Beach, California
Workshop Objectives:

Participants will:
* Learn to present earth science lessons in a student-involving, game-like context requiring both concrete and abstract thinking skills;
Teachers will receive 200-page workbook containing reproducible, classroom-ready lesson materials as well as kits of rock and mineral specimens;
* Learn how to structure these lessons to be appropriate to different class levels and to different learning styles; and
* Learn to utilize the scientific method in specific earth science lessons.

Workshop Agenda:
(1) Introduction to Earth Science Lesson Cycles, and review of hands-on, active learning approaches to teaching earth science;
(2) "Hunt for Fossil Fuels" - Introduction to and practice session for a game-like classroom exercise requiring both concrete thinking, earth science facts, and multi-dimensional critical thinking;
(3) Overview of earth materials (rocks and minerals);
(4) "Geo-bingo" - Introduction to and practice session for a game-like classroom exercise involving rocks and minerals;
(5) Overview of methods for determining ages of rock formations, with introduction to game-like active-learning lessons called "Sequence Puzzles" and "Get a Half-Life";
(6) Overview of nature of earth's interior, followed by review of active-learning approaches to teaching this topic, with sample game ideas; and
(7) Overview of principles utilized to interpret earth history, with introduction to classroom lesson ideas.

Field Trip:

Saturday June 24, 2000
9:00 AM to 4:30PM (check-in 8:30  9:00 AM)
Depart from and return to the Westin Hotel (Ocean Blvd and Long Beach Blvd.)
Long Beach, California

Field Trip Objectives:
Participants will:
* Understand the origin of oil deposits and how they are searched for by geologists and brought into production by engineers;
* Understand the typical life cycles of oil fields, including the economic considerations involved;
* Understand the environmental hazards posed by both currently operating and abandoned oil fields, and the great efforts expended by oil companies and government agencies to mitigate these hazards; and
* Be able to design and run a field trip appropriate to their own students that utilizes many / all of the stops in this trip and that conveys many/most of the facts and concepts presented here.
Field Trip Agenda:
(1) Visit rock exposures near shoreline at San Clemente State Beach. Examine features that indicate environment of formation of sedimentary rocks.  Discuss nature of oil deposits, and how geologists attempt to extend understanding of surface exposures to deeply buried sedimentary rocks in which oil deposit are found;
(2) Travel from San Clemente to Newport Beach area, observing enroute (1) earthquake faults; (2) landslides in the San Juan Hills; (3) uplifted shorelines;
(3) Visit largely inactive Newport Beach Oil Field.   Examine abandoned wells, some  that leak gas, others that have their gas captured and put to productive use.  Discuss possible environmental hazards of old oil fields;
(4) Visit Huntington Beach oil field, which is an example of an oil field nearing the end of productive life, with urban construction progressively covering the old field.  Discuss numerous examples of environmental concerns surrounding construction over old oil fields.  Also, examine evidence for the earthquake hazards posed by the Newport / Inglewood fault zone, along which this oil field and many others are located; and
(5) Visit Wilmington oil field.  Discuss techniques for "rejuvenating" old oil fields to make them more productive, as has occurred here.  Discuss and examine evidence of severe subsidence of shoreline areas caused by oil removal, and methods used to prevent further environmental damage related to subsidence.
