Letter from the Chair . . . Vivian K. Bust

As we ramp-up for the 2001 SPE year, we are again grateful to the section members for their generous support of the new and ongoing section programs and activities. During the last couple months, the Chairperson succession plans changed when Bruce Davis announced that he would be unable to accept the office of Chairperson for health reasons. Bruce will serve as the 2001 Honorary Chairperson. Effective September 3, 2000, the board has elected John Jepson as the 2001 Chairperson. John is currently serving as the Scholarship Chair. John Jepson is the Enhanced Recovery Engineer with the CA-DOGGR. He has been member of SPE since 1990.

This year, we will be using more email and fax communications to optimize section resources. This is the last newsletter that will be US mailed to ALL section members. Beginning in October, only members without email addresses will receive it by US mail. Those with email addresses will be sent a text version of the current newsletter at the same time it is posted on the website. Please keep your email address current in the master database located at SPE in Richardson, TX.

We are looking forward to continuing the section's successful technical, educational and community outreach programs again this year.

The 2000 golf tournament fundraiser was a great success. We would like you to know, that over the past 6 years of SPE involvement in the tourney 100% of the SPE cumulative net income of $71,460 was used to support educational, scholarship and community outreach programs. This golf money plus $20,000 of other section monies funded these programs. We are planning the SPE Industry Appreciation luncheon for November 10, 2000. Please mark your calendars and stay tuned for the latest section news on our website at www.laspe.org.

It has been my pleasure to serve as the 2000 Chairperson for the SPE LA Basin Section. We had a fabulous year inclusive of the first-ever SPE-AAPG convention. Thank you all for your support and friendship. Bon Voyage!

TOPIC: The East Lost Hills Blowout
In November 1998, about 1 mile east of the Lost Hills oilfield in northern Kern County, a blowout of world class proportions occurred. The talk will consist of a general review of events immediately before the blowout, and the 6 months required to control, kill and abandon this deep, high temperature, high pressure well.

Dave Clark has been with the division since September 1980. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in geology, and 3 years post-graduate study, with primary focus in carbonate petrology, from Fresno State. Dave is the Divisions primary permitting engineer in the Bakersfield office. Dave has held numerous positions during his tenure in Bakersfield, including administrating the Environmental and Underground Injection Control Programs.

Note from Honorary Chair . . . Bruce Davis

As you know I was very much looking forward to being LASPE Chairperson. As most of you know by now I am the victim of a very serious form of brain
cancer known as glioblastoma multiforme. I am very honored to have been appointed Honorary Chairperson and look forward to seeing you at meetings as my condition permits. I wish John Jepson the very best as he steps into the role of Chairperson. I know that he will do an excellent job. Please keep me in your prayers as my struggle with this disease continues. If you believe in such, I solicit your prayers for a miraculous healing.
