The Application of Satellite Radar Interferometry to Subsidence Monitoring in the Belridge and Lost Hills Fields, California

Summary:
Production from weak, compactable, and low permeability diatomite reservoirs in the Belridge and Lost Hills fields in California has resulted in subsidence.  Previous efforts to monitor subsidence in these fields have included the installation of surveyor monuments which allow the comparison of repeated elevation measurements at the monument locations and the installation of permanent arrays of tiltmeters to measure the direction of the gravity vector through time. 

Since late 1998, repeat-pass interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) data have been acquired from several satellites and evaluated over the Belridge and Lost Hills fields to monitor subsidence.  Because of the dynamic nature of subsidence in these fields, InSAR data sets are being acquired approximately monthly over both fields to monitor subsidence rate changes caused by field development and operating practices.

InSAR data acquired over large areas with a 20 meter spatial resolution have enabled variations in subsidence rates to be mapped across each field.  This data have added spatial definition to several subsidence bowls which formed over the most productive portions of each of these two fields.provider the opportunity to maximise the life of its CT fleet. Failures due to purely plastic fatigue have almost been eradicated, as a result of these studies and models.

Congratulations to LA SPE members Marina Voskanian and Mark Shemaria for receiving national  SPE Distinguished Service Awards. Among many of her volunteer efforts, Marina has served as a past Section Chair for Los Angeles and Western Regional Director for the SPE.   Mark has been active for many years with SPE Environmental Committees and Conferences.
