Letter from the Chairman... Every year the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) recognizes
a special group of members that have attained new status as Legion
of Honor members. This classification is given to persons that
have had continuous membership with SPE for 50 years. Their dedication
and involvement in SPE are certainly one of the reasons why the
Society has remained successful. The following persons are to
be congratulated: These members will be honored on March 16, 1999, during our SPE Distinguished Lecturers Series. Please join us in celebrating our new Legion of Honor members at a buffet luncheon at the Long Beach Petroleum Club. They have been invited as our guests and I would like to show them our Section's appreciation. Marina Voskanian has agreed to host the presentation of the SPE Legion of Honor Certificates and has also attained copies of the members original applications for a bit of fun. Please refer to the announcement within the Newsletter for more information. Also, on March 31, 1999, beginning at 5:00 PM, the SPE LA Basin Section is having their 5th Annual Santa Maria Style BBQ Fundraiser and SPE Membership Drive at Wetherford Enterra. They are located at 19722 S. Alameda Street in Rancho Dominguez, about 100 yards north of Del Amo and Alameda on the right hand side. The proceeds from this event helps to provide over 150 kindergartners with Easter eggs filled with wrapped chocolate candy and their picture taken with the Easter Bunny. These children are from the Long Beach International Elementary School and many of them are from low socio-economic families. The BBQ is always a good time with lots of great food, socializing with industry friends, and plenty of nice prizes. Plan to attend and be sure to invite your friends and co-workers. PETROLEUM TECHNOLOGY FORUM Ed Santiago Chairman DOGGR (714) 816-6847 LUNCHEON FORUM: DATE: Tuesday, March 16, 1999 TIME: 11:30 am - Social PLACE: Long Beach Petroleum Club COST: $15.00 General Admission RESERVATIONS: Not Required An SPE Distinguished Lecturer SPEAKER: Robert A. Skopec TOPIC: "Reservoir Evaluation and Data Integration in Horizontal Wellbores" Achieving the maximum economic benefits from horizontal drilling
requires through understanding of reservoir characteristics.
The key to successful horizontal drilling in integrating a wide
variety of static and dynamics measurement: core and log analysis,
rock mechanics testing, in-situ stress determinations, wellbore
stability modeling, and large scale reservoir diagnostics. Measuring
rock properties directly from undamaged, oriented core is critical
in horizontal wellbore design. In many drilling scenarios, vertical
pilot hole coring, advanced wireline logging, and evaluation
of the in-situ stress tensors can be used to optimize well placement.
This approach allows timely evaluation of the reservoir before
the horizontal well section is drilled. 5th Annual Santa Maria Style BBQ |

SPE * API * D&D "FRAMING THE FUTURE" Last year's theme was "The Dream Makers". We set out to help our local schools to develop programs that help students with aptitudes in math and science, as well as continue our scholarship program to assist local college students pursuing an education in petroleum engineering. I am pleased to announce that we were very successful. We awarded a record setting six scholarships and expanded our school programs. We were also able to expand our contributions to an additional charity. "ALIVE" (Alternatives to Living in a Violent Environment), a program to inform and assist our youth of the alternatives when confronted with domestic violence and teen dating. We are making a big difference in many young lives. We would like to continue playing a part in their lives by "Framing their Future". By continuing to support events like this, we will be able to frame the future for many kids in our community. It is the mission of this committee to promote and support educational opportunities by developing the financial mechanisms. This golf tournament is a great way to help build the future of our young people as well as create a quality experience for our contributors. By donating and/or participating, we will ensure these programs are innovative, effective and most of all possible. Thank you,
