View from the chair. . . I hope you have had an enjoyable summer. The past year has been one of significant achievements for our Section, and I would like to share some of them with you. We initiated a Continuing Education program. A short course on Basic Concepts of Hydraulic Fracturing was presented in June, and two more short courses are planned during the remainder of the year. We co-hosted the 2005 SPE Western Region Meeting in Long Beach in collaboration with the San Joaquin Valley Section. We celebrated the 50-year anniversary of our Section, which was attended by nearly 150 people. Nearly 300 people participated in our Annual Golf Tournament. The golf tournament is our Section’s major fundraiser; its proceeds fund many of our programs, such as scholarships, support of Science Fairs, and various community outreach programs. We will award $11,000 in scholarships this year, compared to $8,000 last year. Two of our members, Dr. Iraj Ershaghi and Mr. Richard Finken, were awarded the SPE Western Region Distinguished Service Award. The Section’s achievements are made possible by the active participation of members. So, I urge you to become more active in your Section’s programs and activities, and better yet, help shape them. I will complete my term as Chairperson on September 30, and Dr. Pat Shuler will be the new Chairperson for 2005-06.
