View from the chair. . . Dear LA Basin SPE Members, We have had the pleasure of recognizing achievement of a number of SPE members on two fronts. First of all we recognized at the previous meeting in October that Ed Mayer has received the Society of Petroleum Engineers highest honor, an Honorary Membership. This recognition is reserved for only about 0.1% of SPE members. We all congratulate Ed for his long and continuous service to the oil industry, SPE, and especially for his contributions to the LA Basin Section. Both the October and November meetings are highlighted by recognition of the several students in the LA Basin who are receiving scholarships from the LASPE. We also appreciate the support for the scholarship program from BreitBurn, the Gas Company, and Nancy Davis. Recipients of these scholarships include high school, undergraduate, and graduate students. Rod Kane of the Scholarship Committee was pleased to report that LASPE increased the number of students who received scholarships in 2005. Students and parents are encouraged to contact our website and Rod to obtain information and forms to apply for scholarships next year. Finally, I remind members that we seek your feedback and guidance. Please do e-mail suggestions about what we can do to make our section improve their experience as a SPE member.
