Note from the Chairperson,
May 2004
Activity Update:
April,
May and June will be an active time for LASPE. Hopefully, you will be
able to participate in one or two of the following activities.
Weatherford BBQ:
The BBQ will be held on April 7th after a one-year hiatus. The BBQ will
be hels at Weatherford's Facilities in Rancho Dominguez. Please see
the newsletter announcement for more details. This is a social event
for networking, recruiting new members and for outreach to teachers
at schools in our elementary and high school outreach programs.
April
Forum: Hal Bopp, California's Oil and Gas Supervisor will be
the speaker at our regular Forum at the Petroleum Club on April 13.
He will be covering current and future issues confronting our industry.
Science Fairs:
Volunteers are needed at the California State (May 24 25 at Exposition
Park), LA County (April 14 - 15 at Staples Center), Orange County (April
28 at the fairgrounds) and Long Beach Science Fairs (April 24 at Cabrillo
H.S. in Long Beach). LASPE members join the ranks of the judges and
also judge projects for our own cash awards to deserving students interested
in science. These are worthwhile and fun events. If you are interested,
please contact Dan Dudak at 562-577-9485 (cell) or by email at dudakd@slc.ca.gov.
Scholarships:
Please visit our website at www.laspe.org to find a list of scholarships
available to LASPE SPE members and to their sons, daughters, grandchildren
and siblings. LASPE has budgeted $8,000 for scholarships this year,
but we can't make awards without applications.
PetroTech Mini-Expo:
This is a new idea for transfer of developing technologies in the LA
Basin. All of you should have received a request to submit projects
for presentation at LASPE's May 11th Forum at the Long Beach Petroleum
Club. The idea is up to 4 short verbal presentations of interesting
and successful projects in the basin followed by lunch followed by a
poster session for each providing the opportunity for interested members
to learn more and to exchange ideas.
June
Golf Tournament: Full details are on our website. This will
be a really great event. Mark Shemaria and his team have put together
a 36-hole tournament on June 18th at Los Serranos Country Club with
loads of prizes and plenty of delicious food.
2005 Western
Regional Meeting: This is outside the current timeframe, but here
is an early mention anyway. The 2005 WRM will be a joint meeting with
the San Joaquin Valley Section next March 30 through April 1, 2005 in
Anaheim, near Disneyland. Co-Chairs are Joyce Holtzclaw (Berry Petroleum)
of SJVSPE and Mark Kapelke (Tidelands) of LASPE. There will be plenty
of opportunities for LASPE members to participate in this worthwhile
conference.
LASPE is your professional
organization for technology transfer, continuing education and community
outreach promoting our industry. All members are welcome to participate
in any of the above activities. All are invited to attend our board
meetings that take place approximately an hour before the monthly Petroleum
Technology Forum at the Long Beach Petroleum Club.
