Chairperson's message for May 2010
Hello Fellow SPE Members,
I hope everyone is enjoying our lovely Spring we have in Southern California. Spring is a very busy time for SPE with the Western Regional Meeting coming to town. This is a great time for you to get involved in the activities. Tomorrow, May 7th, is our biggest fundraiser of the year, the annual golf tournament. Your support enables us to continue a variety of community outreach programs, sponsor the SPR WRM and activity of the Young Professionals. Speaking of community outreach, the Student Outreach Committee participated in the Orange and Los Angeles County Science Fairs. We had the opportunity to judge the great projects these kids put together and posted the winners in our newsletter.
2010 SPE Western Regional Meeting (WRM)
If you haven’t done so, now is the time to register for the 2010 joint meeting between Western Regional Section of SPE (WRM), Pacific Coast Section of AAPG and Cordilleran Section GSA. This meeting will take place from May 25-29 at the Anaheim Marriott. Visit www.laspe.org or www.spe.org website for all technical program, workshops, conference registration, and hotel reservation information.
We have an excellent technical program and nine training workshops. Workshops are scheduled on May 25 and 26, 2010. Please note that the negotiated room rate at the Anaheim Marriott of $99 per night is good until the allotted rooms are sold out.
WRM Announcements: Volunteers Needed. For the WRM, SPE will have a special membership booth in the exhibit halls to allow members to renew their membership or allow non-members to become new members of SPE. The SPE Booth will provide information about our regional meeting, sell technical program CDs, and list society activities for the year. If you would like to volunteer your time to help at the booth, please contact Brandy Fellers at (562)-624-3233 or Bob Visser (310) 378-7925.
2010 SPE President: Dr. Behrooz Fattahi, 2010 SPE President, will be attending and speaking at the WRM. He is the keynote speaker on the management panel session on Thursday May 27 and will be at the Regional Awards Luncheon on Friday, May 28, 2010. We are planning a meet and greet luncheon on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 with SPE President, Board of Directors, and Committee Members. The luncheon will occur from noon to 1 p.m. in our Workshop area at the Anaheim Convention Center. For more information, please contact me at perezv@slc.ca.gov.

2010 Golf Tournament
Our 2010 Golf Tournament, our major fund raiser of the year, will be held May 7, 2010 once again at the great Los Serranos Country Club. The event is our Section’s biggest Fundraisers and your financial support is what keeps our organization healthy so please grab your co-workers and friends and sign up to join in the fun. Besides the great golf tournament festivities include the evening Banquet and raffle and a fantastic pre-tournament BBQ sponsored by Weatherford. Orange and LA County Science Fairs
To stimulate our student’s interest in the sciences and the petroleum industry SPE we once again participated in the Los Angeles and Orange County Science Fairs. Our Student Outreach Committee participated and had the opportunity to judge the great projects these kids put together.
The displays were judged on creativity, scientific thought, thoroughness, skill, and clarity. Each winner received a $100 special award and certificate of achievement from LA SPE for petroleum engineering or energy related Science Fair projects. The 59th Annual California State Science Fair will be held on May 17-18, 2010, at the California Science Center in Los Angeles Exposition Park. Thank you SPE special judges Jack Smith, Ed Santiago, Craig Webster, and Neil Escalante for volunteering your time and creating awareness Statewide of the efforts of these students.
SPE Legion of Honor Awards
