Chairperson's message for April 2010
Hello Fellow SPE Members,
Please review our newsletter and LASPE.org website closely as we have finalized information on the 2010 SPE Western Regional Meeting (WRM) in collaboration with the Pacific Section AAPG and Cordilleran Section GSA Annual Meetings from May 27-29 at the Anaheim Marriott. We have provided weblinks for the technical program, LASPE/ PTTC Regional Workshops/Courses and field trips (page 8 in April Newsletter), and how to register for the events and make hotel reservations. We truly have an excellent technical program and set of training workshops. Workshops are scheduled on May 25 and 26, 2010 and we encourage everyone to please notify your colleagues to sign up for the classes as proceeds help our local section to pay for costs associated with the event. Please note that the early registration deadline for the WRM and the negotiated room rate at the Anaheim Marriott of $99 per night is good until the allotted rooms are sold out or April 26. Thanks again for all WRM committee members who are working diligently on preparing all their assignments for the event.
WRM Announcements: Volunteers Needed. For the WRM, SPE will have a special booth in the exhibit halls that will allow attendees to renew their membership or become new members of SPE. Booths will also contain information about our regional meetings and activities for the year. If you would like to volunteer your time to help at the booth, please contact Brandy Fellers at (562)-624-3233 or Bob Visser (310) 378-7925.
2010 SPE President: Dr. Behrooz Fattahi, 2010 SPE President, will be attending and speaking at the WRM. He is on the management panel session and a special speaker at the Regional Awards Luncheon on Friday, May 28, 2010. If you are planning to attend a workshop at the Anaheim Convention Center, you will have an opportunity to hear a short talk during the workshops lunch break from 12:20-12:45 pm. If you are not attending a workshop and would like to join the luncheon on Wednesday, May 26, 2010, please contact me, Vanessa Perez by email. Price to attend is $25, if not already signed up for workshop.
Student Outreach: SPE’s elementary outreach committee prepares an Easter Egg Hunt for about 120 kindergarten students at International Elementary School in Long Beach. This year, we were happy to join with the Young Professionals (YP) as they hosted our 2010 Easter Egg Hunt. We appreciate all their help and a special thanks to Leila Rashedi, Katy Canan, Aditya Varma, and Candra Janova for doing all the leg work and assisting the elementary outreach committee. On March 25, 2010, the YP and staff of California State Lands Commission filled over 1200 plastic Easter eggs with wrapped chocolate candy. The Easter Egg Hunt will take place at Drake Park in Downtown Long Beach on April 1, 2010. Volunteers will arrive at the park at 8:30 a.m. to clean up the park and hide all the Easter eggs. If you would like to volunteer please notify me at perezv@slc.ca.gov.
