November 16, 2004 Board Meeting and Forum Report
Twelve LASPE
board members, chairpersons and guests attended the monthly board meeting. Chairperson Raj Upadhyay convened the
meeting at 10 AM in advance of the Petroleum Technology Forum. Key issues reviewed included approval
of a 2004 – 05 budget projecting a nominal surplus, plans to nominate Dr.
Iraj Ershaghi as a SPE Distinguished Lecturer, support of Mark Shemaria's
nomination for the 2005-08 SPE EHS Director position and plans for the 2005 SPE
Western Regional Meeting to be held March 30 – April 1 at the Irvine
Hyatt Regency Hotel. This meeting
is being jointly organized by LASPE and SJVSPE. Scott Hara presented his plans for the WRM to add a Pacific
Section AAPG Geology Session and an Electrical Submersible Pump Workshop to the
technical program. He is also
initiating a new idea to invite bright non-petroleum local engineering
undergraduate students to the convention to introduce them to our industry, our
technical challenges and to the SPE membership. The idea is to encourage more local students into our
graduate schools and work force.
All LASPE members are welcome to participate in any future board meetings. These are always held starting at 10 AM at the Long Beach Petroleum Club in advance of the Petroleum Technology Forum.
At the
Petroleum Technology Forum, Dr. Iraj Ershaghi gave an excellent talk entitled
“Tunnel Vision Management of Mature Oilfields.” His talk highlighted the fact that
while companies worldwide are spending large sums to find new fields, the
resource in existing fields between current expected recoveries and residual
oil saturation can be just as rewarding with innovative approaches and new
processes.
Nearly 60 members and guests attended the session.
LASPE’s next Petroleum Technology Forum will be held on December 14, 2004 at the Long Beach Petroleum Club and will feature Distinguished Lecturer Usman Ahmed who will speak on Hydraulic Fracture Design, Treatment and Optimization: Lessons Learned from Case Studies.
